Houston Chronicle and Fete de Lune

Our club featured on the front page of the Clear Lake section of the Houston Chronicle today! You can see the article here, complete with pictures of President Curtis Potterveld and Coach Paden Hilborn.

If you’re new to our club, we offer Beginner Foil classes for $75/month, and you can see our current class schedule here.

And a reminder: our renowned annual Veteran’s Tournament (for fencers 40 years old or older), the Fete de Lune, will be held this Saturday at NASA’s Gilruth center gym. We’ll be there from 8 to 5 pm, and anyone is welcome to come by and watch the fencing. If you have any questions about the sport or the club, there will be many people there happy to answer your questions. And you’ll be able to see the amazing prizes that the fencers are competing for, including hand-crafted necklaces for the women and a custom-crafted sword for the men. For veteran fencers, remember to sign up on AskFred.

Olympic Fencing

Hello! Have you perhaps been seeing all the fencers at the Olympics? Our nation’s flag bearer Mariel Zagunis is a saber fencer, and MSNBC showed 18 year old Lee Kiefer fencing foil on Saturday. If that was your first time seeing fencing, or perhaps seeing it on TV reminded you that it’s something ‘you’ve always wanted to try,” come on down to our club! We have beginning foil lessons starting on Tuesdays and Thursdays in August–$75 gets you four weeks of introductory lessons plus equipment. All you need to try it are sneakers, long pants, and enthusiasm! While we recommend that people start with foil, if you’d like to learn more about Mariel Zagunis’ weapon, saber, join us on a Friday night–you’ll meet plenty of people more than happy to show you the basics.

Getting Attention

It looks like our move to the new facility has been garnering CLFC a bit of local attention. Don Cravey was featured as the Bay Area Athlete of the Week in the Houston Chronicle earlier this month, and Dickinson local paper The Post (turn to page 9) devoted a page to the club and an interview with Vice President John Trojanowski.

Welcome to the new students and members who have heard about us in this last month!

Fencing Has Commenced!

Last Thursday, a group of fencers showed up and started to break in the new facility. The first bout was John Trojanowski vs. Curtis Potterveld in epee, and the first lesson was Albert Chang learning from Samuel Sypien in foil. Now it’s your turn! All this coming week, Jun 25 – 28, we’re offering open house fencing from 7pm to 10pm. If you’re planning to attend, you might leave a comment on this post saying what days you’ll be there and what weapon you’ll be fencing–that should give us the best chance of making sure everyone gets to fence who they want to. See you all there!

Thanks to Crystal Cervantes for the pictures!

Our New Home

We have good news to share: CLFC has a new home! Yesterday President Curtis Potterveld signed a 13 month lease for a facility in Dickinson. The address is:

1650-C Dickinson Blvd
Dickinson, TX 77539

We won’t start fencing this week, since we need to get electricity, AC, and insurance all turned on and applied to the new facility. We plan to run a week or two as an open house while we figure out what the new space needs and the best way to utilize it–then we’ll start classes again. Keep an eye on this space for information on classes, schedules, membership, and more.

Also, we now have CLFC patches for sale! We have a couple dozen as a first run, available for $5 each.

See you all next week!
